Bodum Santos Stovetop Glass Vacuum 34-Ounce Coffee Maker Review

Bodum Santos Stovetop Glass Vacuum 34-Ounce Coffee Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Bodum Santos Vacuum Coffeemaker makes excellent coffee. Smooth, full flavored, hot. This model requires more interaction than a percolator or drip coffeemaker. If you're not willing to participate in the coffee making process, don't purchase this coffeemaker. However, the end result is well worth the few extra minutes required. Some tips that may be useful:
1.) Use coarse grinds to avoid clogging the filter;
2.) When placing the upper chamber on the lower carafe, make sure there is a good seal between the two globes, as this will help in the vacuum process;
3.) Always make sure there is at least a centimeter or two of water remaining in the lower carafe, otherwise the carafe will crack;
4.) Allow the water and grinds to mix together in the upper chamber for a minute or two before removing from heat source (coarse grinds produce a weaker flavor compared to finer grinds, so allow a bit more time for the water to extract the flavor of the beans while in the upper chamber);
5.) Remove the entire coffeemaker from the heat source and carefully place on a cool surface, keeping in mind that the coffeemaker will be top heavy and hot;
6.) If the coffee remains in the upper chamber and doesn't completely drain to the bottom carafe, return the entire coffeemaker to the heat source again for a minute, then remove again to a cool surface;
7.) Purchase a good thermos or insulated carafe to transfer your remaining coffee to (Nissan Thermos is a good brand, check out reviews on Amazon.com).
8.) Coffeegeek.com and Coffeekid.com have additional information on vacuum brewing.
Pros: Coffee is hot, full-flavored, and not bitter. The process is fun. Clean up is easy, if done soon after brewing. Affordable from Amazon.com when on sale. Reusable filter. Coffee is hot, full-flavored, and not bitter. (It's worth mentioning twice.)
Cons: Capacity is only 8 cups (32 oz.). Filter can sometimes be unreliable. Uses more grinds than average peculator or drip models. Extra caution needed when using, as most of the coffeemaker is made of glass. Instructions are scant.
Five stars for a wonderful product.

There is a good reason you can find a SANTOS coffeemaker in nearly every Scandinavian home, this vacuum brewing system has been fascinating coffee lovers for over sixty years.In the fifties, Peter Bodum, the father of today's owner, Jorgen Bodum, imported an French vacuum coffee maker and sold it on the Danish Market.Although he found it both unsatisfactory and expensive, he was convinced that the vacuum brewing system was an excellent way to brew an exquisite cup of coffee. Thus, the first Bodum Santos vacuum coffee maker was born.In collaboration with Danish designer Kaas Klaeson, Peter Bodum developed what we know today as the SANTOS, establishing the credo:‘good design doesn't have to be expensive'.The magic of the Santos holds both adults and children spellbound as they watch the boiling water rush from the bottom glass jug to the upper one where it gets mixed with freshly ground coffee. After a few minutes off the stovetop, a vacuum forms in the base which pulls rich black coffee through a filter and back into the bottom jug. This captivating process combines the ideal water temperature with just the right brewing time and makes for superb results. Whatever your preferred coffee and roast, the Santos vacuum system brings out the very best aromas in your cup.

Espresso Pot Gaskets 6-Cup 2 13/16" Wide for Aluminum Pot Set-4 Review

Espresso Pot Gaskets 6-Cup 2 13/16 Wide for Aluminum Pot Set-4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After replacing a worn out gasket with these OEM gaskets, I was losing over half the water in the pot to steam. After I inserted new Bialetti gaskets, my caffetiera was brewing like new again.
The problem seems to be the thickness and hardness of the gaskets. These OEM gaskets are half the thickness of the original Bialetti gaskets; the material of the Bialetti gaskets also seem slightly softer, so that with the Bialetti, the top and bottom can be screwed deeper into the gasket, creating the tight seal you need for the caffetiera to work properly.
I'm all for saving a few bucks on OEM products, but, unfortunately, these gaskets left me decaffeinated.

Delonghi EMK6 Alicia Electric Moka Espresso Coffee Maker Review

Delonghi EMK6 Alicia Electric Moka Espresso Coffee Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
1/20/06 First reviewed: I received this as a gift and had about twenty wonderful cups of moka from this cute little electric machine, but then one day in the third week of ownership, steam went a'flyin outside of the moka maker instead of into the top chamber. I called customer service and was given a run-around, ugh. I was told that without a receipt I could buy the replacement unit for around $40 plus shipping. She said that most of their products have a 30 or 60 day warranty, which surprised me greatly. Since I'd owned the product for less than 30 days, I figured I was still in the warranty time any way one looked at it, but I was wrong. With no receipt, no exchange from DeLonghi. Well, I tried to use the unit after really tightening the top and bottom together and the escaping steam abated. The next week, the shut off valve on the heating unit started making a terrible noise and the unit wouldn't even start. It would be triggered within a few seconds to shut off, so I had nothing at all brewing. Aha, I regained my smartness finally, and took the item to Bed Bath and Beyond, and they were extremely gracious in having another sent to me because the store didn't have it in stock. I hope that when this replacement arrives in a week or two I'll love it again, but I hope this time it's a more long lasting relationship. I'll recommend that you buy this from Amazon because the price is substantially less but be sure to keep your receipt even if you register the warranty!
UPDATE 2/21/07 The replacement unit has been working flawlessly for a year now and it's used on a daily basis. I'd give it another star!
UPDATE 1/16/09 Another year has almost passed and this is still working great. With proper care, I think it will outlive us all!

VeV Vigano Kontessa Nero Espresso Maker Review

VeV Vigano Kontessa Nero Espresso Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using a cheap aluminum espresso maker forever - the kind your parents probably used. I had issues with the interior corroding and decided to try the Vev 12-cup - and I can't believe the difference. Same beans, same grind - but a completely different taste. I had no idea just switching to a different pot could make such a difference...it really was night and day. Only gripes are that assembling it to get a leak-proof seal seems a little challenging, and although it's labeled 12 cups, I get about 16oz. per brewing.

Moka Express 6 Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker by Bialetti Review

Moka Express 6 Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker by Bialetti
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I have been spending a pretty penny at the local coffee shop, so I began looking for inexpensive home alternatives. Most of the coffee snobs claim you have to purchase a $200+ machine and $150+ grinder to have a decent cup of espresso. I turned instead to the frugal Italians. They did invent the stuff, afterall. My Bialetti Moka Express coffee pot came this afternoon. I was a little concerned that a $20 pot might not meet the high standards of the gourmet beverages wifey and I have become accustomed to. I was wrong. The brew made by this ingenious little pot is a little weaker than "pumped" espresso and lacks the foamy cap (crema) that all the snobs rave about, but mixed with some hot, frothed milk and a bit of chocolate syrup I couldn't tell the difference between Bialetti and Seattle's Best.
This rich brew comes from a tiny little aluminum contraption with no moving parts, no electronic gizmos, no pump handle and virtually no wait time or clean-up. You just fill, brew and pour. It's that simple. Its base only covers half of the stovetop's smallest eye and I expect it will be easy to store due to its diminuitive size. I've already had three cups of homemade mocha today, and I've only had the pot since noon! *jitter jitter* The point is this: If you're a coffee lover who is bored with Folgers from a Mr. Coffee drip machine or is spending way too much at Starbucks, the Moka pot is an inexpensive and easy-to-use alternative with excellent results.

Espresso Maker by Cuisinox in Mirror Aluminum- 1 cup

This is a great stovetop espresso maker. We enjoy espresso just about every day and whenever we go to Italy we stock up on the good stuff. This espresso maker is great quality for great coffee. I've had a few espresso makers of this style but this is the best one yet. Instead of the normal plastic ring that most others come with this one comes a silicone ring which I notice is MUCH easier to clean and it does a better job of keeping the coffee in the pot as it bubbles to the top reservoir. With the others the coffee sometimes spewed out the side a bit. What we also notice with this one is that the inside does not change much or oxidize as previous makers did. Highly recommended!

Bialetti Musa 6-Cup Stovetop Percolator Review

Bialetti Musa 6-Cup Stovetop Percolator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before buying the Musa, I used the Bialetti Moka Express for about 4 years and loved it. Then I bought the Musa, expecting the same perfection, but I was very disappointed. The Musa is more of a coffee maker than an espresso maker. True, it makes an amazing cup of coffee, but it is far too weak to be used in a cappuccino or latte. I found that I had to use twice as many shots to have the same potency as my old Moka Express which means a lot less room for steamed milk and less servings all around. If you don't mind the aluminum, get the Moka Express instead.

Bialetti Venus, 6 Cup
Average Reviews:

Use med.-low heat for gas and you are ready in 11 minutes. Make sure the stainless steel filter is always facing in the right direction or the expresso maker will leak. Be aware that they are talking about expresso cups (demitasse 2.5 oz cup) and not the savage sized coffee addicts cup we Americans are use to using. Also, most civilized people add milk at a ratio of 1:1, so if you make five demitasse cups of expresso (12.5 oz.), then your coffee maker should produce around 6 oz. of pure expresso.

My sister spent a year in Italy and gave this to me as a gift. I use it everyday! It is so quick - a cup of espresso on the stove in 7 minutes - and it's easy to clean, and it gives me coffeehouse quality espresso without ever leaving home. I LOVE IT! I would recommend one for ALL coffee enthusiasts. Don't waste your money on a large espresso machine when you can have a simply authentic espresso maker that is suburb!

Bialetti Musa 10-Cup Stovetop Percolator Review

Bialetti Musa 10-Cup Stovetop Percolator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This makes great espresso!! Here are a few tips to make a perfect cup of espresso: Remember to fill the water just below the safety valve. Too much water can prevent the valve from working properly. It's kinda like a pressure cooker. Too much water can cause problems.
Don't overfill the funnel with too much coffee. Too much coffee in the funnel can cause the coffee not to brew properly. I fill it just below the top edge of the funnel. Set your burner to medium or medium low and watch it carefully. Don't walk away because it can get ahead of you. Besides, watching the coffee brew is kinda cool ;) Keep working at it and you'll get the hang of it and pretty soon, you'll LOVE it! I use mine everyday and have had it for a few years now and I haven't had a single problem with it. Remember it is NOT the same espresso that you find at Starbucks. This makes traditional Italian espresso.** UPDATE 4/7/2011:
I'm still using this espresso maker. It operates perfectly. Like I said in my original review, make sure you do not have your burner on too high. Keep it on medium to medium low. You can adjust the burner if you need to depending on the make and model of your unit. I've noticed that several reviewers have had problems with their maker. I've never had issues with mine. Perhaps their burner was on too high at the time and they didn't realize it. This maker reacts like a pressure cooker. With a pressure cooker, you have to keep an eye on your burner. Keep the heat low and it will work perfectly.
Always check your unit to make sure the gasket is okay. If it's cracked, it needs to be replaced.

My coffee has never tasted better, I'm so glad to have discovered the joys of stove espresso!
Fair warning, though, this doesn't actually make one cup of coffee, as in 8oz. It makes more like a shot of espresso and obviously, you can only make one at a time. Still, totally worth it.

Bialetti Class Stovetop Espresso Maker 6 Cup 06854 Review

Bialetti Class Stovetop Espresso Maker 6 Cup 06854
Average Reviews:

I got this espresso maker today. I made my first cup of coffee with it almost immediately. It was as good as Starbuck's espresso, and I am pleased with it. There is only one small drawback, but it is not unique to this product: it does not cover a small burner on the stove and has to be set on the burner so the handle doesn't sit over the hot part. This is a minor fault. What is nice about this pot is that it has 'aesthetic appeal'. It's a pretty little pot, and it works well, so I'll be using it a lot.

Bialetti Mukka Express Cappuccino Maker Review

Bialetti Mukka Express Cappuccino Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was really excited to get this new product and I tried it right way. The first time I used it, I put the flame on too high and not only did I get milk everywhere (which I should have known from heating up milk and cream when making bechemel sauce or yogurt, milk goes EVERYWHERE when overheated) but water leaked as well.
I can't tell how many times I've used it since (sometimes twice or three pots a day) and I haven't had a problem with it at all. My guests love it as well. If the flame is medium, it doesn't leak. As soon as I hear the milk or cream frothing, I take it off the stove and put it on the sink (just in case, but it hasn't overflowed over since that first time I used it).
It's superfast, and it's supereasy to clean. This little product is saving me lots of money because I no longer desire to buy Cappuccino from Starbucks.
My only complaint about this product is that it has a two-cup capacity. That would be a two-espresso-cup capacity. So if you buy this product don't think it will make 16oz. And keep the flame low-medium. And take it off the heat when the milk starts frothing :)

Bialetti Mini Express 2-Cup Stovetop Percolator

The Mini Express works great. It's easy to use and clean (remember not to use soap), and it brews some nice expresso. I'm usually just making coffee for myself, so I bent one of the spouts around so they both go into one larger cup; I'm not sure if you're supposed to do that, but it worked fine.
A couple of other remarks: The cute cups in the picture aren't included :(, and at the end of the brew, it tends to "spit" coffee until you remove it from the heat. If your cups are tall enough, it's not a problem, but otherwise you'll get little coffee specks all over your stove.
